TAKE the EGID Challenge

Have you ever thought about how much our society revolves around food? It is the center of our celebrations. It is the thing that sustains us, nourishes us and tempts us. Well, imagine a life where you were allergic to the things you liked to eat, or even worse could no longer have an solid foods. That would be torture for just one meal, but imagine a life altered by that dilemma, and you will begin to appreciate the stress, struggles and difficulties, both emotionally, physically and socially of a life with an Eosinophilic disorder.

Our daughter, Kylie, was diagnosed two years ago with one of these disorders known as EE, or [E-O-sin-O-fill-ik E-soph-a-jI-tis] Eosinophilic Esophagitis. It is a condition that is different in each person diagnosed and there are no known cures today, only different medicines, diets and protocols that you hope provide solutions. In my daughter’s case, she went through skin and RAST testing which measure allergic reactions to certain things tested. The skin tests told us things she might be allergic to on a scale from 1 - 4. These included things in the environment as well as foods. The RAST tests were done by taking vials of her blood and testing them for specific allergic responses. The list was narrowed down through the skin tests. This is how we found out that she is anaphylactic to Oats and highly allergic to other items such as wheat, barley, rye and has other sensitivities to eggs, corn and some dairy. It was after much searching for further answers and trying alternative methods of testing for allergies that we found out she is also allergic to B vitamins and more specifically the hormones in milk, rather than lactose or casein. It has been a long journey including trips to the GI (gastroenteroligist) and endoscopies to see what is actually going on inside her throat plus countless, scary trips to the ER while in the middle of a reaction that have helped us to grow a bit wiser in understanding her allergies. We have often kept detailed food diaries since the reactions are commonly delayed with EE. So there is lots of guess work involved in knowing what might have caused the flare ups. And there are always the possibilities of cross contamination by foods being processed at a plant that processes ingredients you are allergic to, even if they are not in the list of ingredients on the label. Uhhh! You get the drift...not an easy road, and try packing things on the go or eating while traveling. It is definitely a challenge.

So how did we get started on this journey of discovery? It started when my husband was having similar incidents of things getting stuck going down that I finally questioned her allergist about it. Dr. Warner said there could definitely be a genetic component and that she thought it was worth talking to a gastroenterologist. And so that began our relationship with Dr. Kubchandani (Dr. K or Dr. Sanjay for short). He is young and smart, and Kylie really respects him. He took a more laid back approach to the EE diagnosis suggesting she start on flovent, a swallowed steroid treatment to shrink the swelling in her throat. Kai was already on so many allergy and asthma meds that this was concerning, but we started on that course. After several scary incidents and reactions, her allergist had something else in mind. It was 9/11/08, a day we will never forget after Kylie’s allergist ordered us to begin a highly restrictive diet. When she listed all the things we had to avoid: [wheat, rye, barley, oats]- basically a gluten-free diet plus no corn, dairy or nuts, I thought we were all going to go nuts! I cried after spending 3 hrs. of shopping at 3 different stores reading labels only to find that one of the banned items was always in the ingredients. It took forever to navigate the grocery store and was more and more depressing reading label after label and feeling the helplessness of not knowing what to possibly feed your child. We were down to very few meats, fruits and some veggies. Many sauces, dressings and seasonings had to be avoided, too. It was a difficult time for us all. As a family, we tried to live within the restrictions ourselves so Kylie didn't have to go it alone, atleast with our family meals. I tried it for a month and it was very challenging and highly restrictive. The easy part was that I had the ability to return to the foods I wanted to eat, and she could not.

Things got easier as we learned alternatives to use in cooking, found new sources for foods, and even some treats. Thank goodness she could have soy, potato and rice to work with! I am very grateful for that as well as the amount of information and support that we have received from other parents on the eosinophylic yahoo group I belong to. We share ideas, treatments, solutions that have worked for our kids, recipes and where to find help and locate good doctors. But incidents continued despite our food journals and what we thought at the time was avoidance to allergic foods. Who knew that there was wheat in Twizzlers licorice or oats in Hot Dog chili? Now, we read ALL labels and never assume. My best advice to parents of newly diagnosed kids.

The reason that I am posting this information now, is that this is National Eosinophilic Awareness Week, and to raise awareness for this growing disorder that is affecting so many people, especially young children at an alarming rate, I am daring you to take the EGID challenge of trying to follow a highly restrictive diet for one day, or even just one meal. If you are on facebook, click on the link above to go to this facebook event.

If not, simply follow these instructions:
On May 14, commit to eating only foods that are free of the top six allergens. These are: Milk (in all forms), Egg, Wheat, Nuts/Peanuts, Soy, and Seafood. This may be quite a difficult task, but after all, this is a CHALLENGE! If you miss doing it on the 14th, try to do this one day or for one meal this week. If you would like to support this cause, consider donating the money that you would normally spend on a coffee, ice cream or one meal to help find a cure. There are two great organizations: CURED and APFED, which raise awareness and support research to help find a cure for EGID (Eosinophilic Gastro Intestinal Disorders). Even a small amount adds up, and yes, the doctors are making progress with their research. Please help them continue making strides towards a cure by donating today in Kylie’s honor. As you can see by her photo, she looks like the average teenager. You would never assume that she has life-threatening food allergies. Not all of the children are as lucky. Some of these children have feeding tubes through their nose or stomach that help sustain them. You can read more about them on the websites below.

To donate to CURED, click here.
To donate to APFED, click here, then click on the donations link.
Feel proud that you are helping brighten the lives of the families and children effected by EGID. And the next time you feel deprived because you missed out on a chocolate chip cookie or favorite meal, count your many blessings and pray for a cure. God Bless You!

Wind and Surf

This spring has been much windier than I recall since we moved six years ago. Yes, can you believe that...it seems just yesterday that we experienced that record amount of hurricanes that welcomed us in 2004. Usually by now the Wenger family should have a great jumpstart on our tans and frequented the beach more than a handful of times, but schedules and life has kept us far from the beach. We did get to go enjoy the beach on Mother’s Day. It was windy and the waves were crashing. It seems to be windier than usual and better waves than in years past. We are hoping to hae great fun up at Ron Jon’s with the surf board this year!

The weather conditions made me think of this birthday card I made recently. The surfer stamp is from Stampin’ Up! and the the cool flourish I picked up at Michaels before Christmas. I used Versamark ink and white embossing powder to create the deco wave on top of the cardstock and patterned paper layers along with my trusty Glue Glider™ Pro to assemble it!

Mother’s Day Stitchery

Yesterday I finished up on some Mother’s Day cards I made using my newest digi stamp set called “Sew” Long Flowers. I am providing a link to my sample album for this set and samples of the Mom Stitched Verse freebie that I told you about in yesterday’s post. If you click on the card photo you can read a description of what I used and how I created these. They are also in the photo gallery on MyGrafico so be sure to check them out and leave me comments. Hope you enjoyed the sneak peek. Be sure to check out the other samples! These cards, below, use the cute patterned papers from Cosmo Cricket’s Earth Love Mini Deck papers. I also posted some tips in my photo descriptions on using Glue Arts adhesives for attaching some of the 3-D elements.

A FREEBIE in honor of all Moms

I created this digi stamp as a thank you to all the mom's out there for all the little things you do for your families that often goes unnoticed. This is a great little verse to add to a card for any mom, aunt, grandmom! Perfect for Mother’s Day, Birthday or simply to say thanks for being there. You can edit the art in Illustrator to use the border by itself, delete text, add your own, color the background with pastels or markers. Great for scrapbook page layouts, too! I included some ideas in the set preview. To download this, go to this Freebie link on MyGrafico.com.

This is a peek at the preview...

So you may be wondering, how do I use a digi stamp? It is simple. You can place the file into a word processing program, scale and print out. If you own a photo editing or graphics editing program such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Paint Shop Pro, Corel Draw, etc., you can colorize, edit, then print or use digitally on projects.

I will be taking photos of Mother's Day cards using this stamp today. Hope to post them by tomorrow to help inspire you with your cardmaking.

It’s Still Spring, Isn’t It?

With temps expected to reach 90’s this weekend, I had to check that it is still Springtime!???
This card was created using some beautiful papers from Karen Foster Design. I love the muted tones on this, which made it extra fun to use with my new Stampin’ Up!® Sizzlits die. It is so fun to use to create mini butterflies, and since it is also an embossing die, I love the textures, too. Don’t you? I used a scrap of white card stock embossed with my mini dot cuttlebug die and used my scallop border punch in succession to create the bottom detail. I often forget to use my little clips from SU, but I paired with a ribbon on this Thank You card. To assemble this card, I used my Glue Glider Pro with high tac adhesive and some mini adhesive squares to attach the smaller items to my card. Here is close shot to show you more detail on the layered elements...

Leave me a note to let me know what you think!

This snake is cramping my style!

For those of you who don’t know this about me, I HATE SNAKES! My sister and I have had a big fear of snakes since we were little. I have gotten over my phobia a little and can tolerate worms and tiny snakes...under 12 inches. We have had to evict a couple of those from our lanai and garden, however, when they are as big around as a hose...I can’t handle that, even if they are good for the garden and non-venomous. Yesterday, on Earth Day, I was watering my garden and potted plants when I spotted this big black snake lying in the Plumbago bush under my daughter’s bedroom window. I was wanting to get the garden spiffed up for prom pics this weekend and this darn snake spoiled my plans. I squirted him with the hose and he quickly disappeared. The problem is...where did he go? I kept squirting the hose, but couldn't seem to chase him out of hiding so I went back out today, and guess where he is? On top of the next bush, sunning himself. So I sicked my husband on him, who said, “He looks friendly!” And I responded, “I don’t care, friendly or not, I hate snakes and want him out of there!” So he agreed to remove him, but when he got a couple inches away, the snake slithered away and Dan ended up with a handful of leaves, and still no snake! He observed the same thing. He seemed to have disappeared into thin air. I suspect he is hiding under the AC unit and of course that is where all the weeds are that I need to remove. GRRRR! Doesn't this snake know I have prom pictures to take and a garden to whip back in shape, and that my schedule can’t revolve around his tanning sessions!!! This snake is cramping my style!

I thought about what card to post. Right now I don't have any good flowery theme ones, but this skull and cross bones seems to fit. You know that I don’t REALLY want the snake dead, just sunbathing in someone else’s garden!

This features skull stamp & Cardstock from SU, embossed
background from Cuttlebug, Fiskars border and Uptown Houndstooth
Digital Paper from Lindsay’s Stamp Stuff found at mygrafico.com.

Sick to Death

Have you ever heard the expression, “I’m sick to death of something or another?” Well, today I am expressing that I AM SICK TO DEATH OF DEATH. Lately, it seems that no matter who I talk to there is nothing but doom and gloom, bad news, illness, depression and yes, death! Come on, it’s Spring and it is supposed to be a time of new life, happiness and bright skies. To tell you how bad it has gotten, my daughter’s hard drive died, my grandfather died, my nieces’ guinea pig died and on Sunday even my stinkin' cell phone died!!! So, today is a day of protest. I only wish to hear cheery news, think good, positive thoughts and will continue to pray that the clouds will soon pass and we will be surrounded by sunshine again. I am posting a card that makes me smile. It is a card I made for my niece a while back. I am, and always will be, a monkey lover so this happy card called, Juvenille Jungle brings a smile to my face. Hope it brightens your day, too! The set is a clear stamp set from Autumn Leaves called Mindy’s Zoo. It is designed by Mindy Terasawa...boy is she talented! The designs are adorable.

Nothing a Good Babka Can’t Cure!

I am running a tad behind on sharing some Easter inspiration, but most of you know my grandfather passed away right before Easter and we went to Philly for his funeral. We just returned last night and I had to share some Easter and springtime cards along with our family’s new mantra...“nothing a good babka can't cure!” You see, I come from an all Polish background and we have a love of our polish foods such as kielbasa, babka, pierogis and others that I can't begin to spell correctly, so I won't bother even trying! LOL.

The morning of my grandfather’s funeral, I woke up with the inside of my cheek aching from biting it while chewing gum the day before...I know I am Polish...try not too laugh to loud now! I asked my mom if she had anything I could put on it and she gave me some ambesol. I rubbed it on my finger and dabbed it on my scrapes. Minutes later the left side of my face felt as if I had a shot of novacaine. I went into instant panic wondering if I would have enough feeling on the left side of my face to get through the prayer of the faithful reading at my grandpa's funeral mass or if I would be drooling over the page. Time was flying by so I decided to eat some babka for breakfast and worry about it if I was still numb after we left the house. Fortunately after breakfast the numbness wore off and I was back to normal, so my Irish brother-in-law, Kevin, later joked, “ah, nothing a good babka can’t cure!”, and so that became the mantra for the weekend, and our standing family joke. If only life were that simple! Some of our family members and friends are dealing with the diagnosis or return of cancer and facing treatment so humor has proved to be an important tool for our family in coping with the stress and sadness. But one thing that I truly discovered this weekend is that nothing can take away pain and suffering, but there is nothing like a family coming together during trying times. These bonds can turn tears to laughter, and make the most unbearable endurable even if for a brief moment.

This “Easter Flutters By” card features a background paper from Karen Foster Design, diecut & embossed butterflies using Stampin’ Up!’s new Beautiful Wings Embosslits die and a Sizzix Big Kick along with a verse from their Well Scripted set. The leaf diecut is also created using the Little Leaves die from Stampin’ Up!®.

This is a not-so-typical approach to an Easter card created using an old scrap of patterned Cardstock from Fancy Pants Designs along with some digi stamps from some of my new sets on myGraficO.com...Easter Tweets color digi stamps and Elegant Frames digi stamps. I used non-traditional colors on this and re-colorized and stacked the verse to match the frame. The digi stamps were colorized and scaled using Adobe Illustrator, then printed out on an inkjet printer. I trimmed them and layered the elements on this card along with some accent cardstock and ribbon to create this fast and fun Easter greeting. Tip: I set up a file with numerous digi stamp elements then print out on one sheet to minimize paper waste. Then I create cards to keep on hand for upcoming holidays, birthdays and general greeting cards.

Check back for more stamped and digi card inspirations that I will post this week.
